The invention relates to a method for cleaning a brake disc (8) of a hybrid or fully electric vehicle with: a control unit (4); a reversible electric machine (6) that can be controlled by the control unit (4) to operate in a recuperation mode to brake the vehicle, in which recuperation mode kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy; at least one mechanical brake device (2) that can be controlled by the control unit (4) to operate in a brake mode to brake the vehicle, wherein the brake device (2) has at least one brake disc (8), which can be fixed to a wheel of the vehicle for conjoint rotation, and which has at least one friction layer (12) that is subject to wear and that forms a braking surface (14), and wherein the brake device (2) comprises at least one braking means (16) that rests against the braking surface (14) of the brake disc (8) during braking in a contacting manner and in a manner generating wear; and at least one optical sensor means (18) allocated to the control unit (4), which optical sensor means is arranged in or on the brake device (2) and by means of which a corrosion of the braking surface (14) can be optically detected, wherein at least when it is detected that a particular degree of corrosion of the braking surface (14) stored in the control unit (4) is reached or exceeded, the vehicle is, during braking, controlled by the control unit (4) to operate at least partially in the brake mode.
