The invention relates to a signal processing device (41) for a communication system (40), such as a BUS system. The signal processing device (41) can perform two different functions, depending on a drop in an energy supply signal (E): a communication function and an emergency operation function. In the case of the communication function, a communication-system-compliant control signal (S) can be generated by means of the signal processing device (41) for transfer as a message signal between a transmitting device (20) coupled to the signal processing device and a receiving device (30). In contrast, in the case of the emergency operation function an activation signal (A) can be generated for transfer as a supply signal between the transmitting device (20) and the receiving device (30).
