A device for accelerating a vehicle as part of a speed control process during a journey towards an upcoming signalling unit is described. The device is configured to determine that, during the journey towards the upcoming signalling unit, the actual driving speed of the vehicle is below the target driving speed of the speed control process. The device is also configured to determine distance information relating to the distance between the upcoming signalling unit and the vehicle and, as part of the process of controlling the speed to the target driving speed, to cause an acceleration of the vehicle with an acceleration value that depends on the distance information.
