The method involves estimating two energetic efficiencies to ensure optimal speed of an electric engine (ME) and a thermal engine (MT) of a mechanical gear box (BV) in the presence of acceleration required by a driver of a hybrid vehicle (V) and speed in progress of the vehicle. An indication of a use mode of the electric engine is determined when one of the energetic efficiencies is higher than the other energetic efficiency, or of the thermal engine with the optimal speed of the gear box when the former energetic efficiency is lower than the latter energetic efficiency. An independent claim is also included for a device for indicating a use mode of a thermal engine and an electric engine of a transmission chain to a mechanical gear box of a hybrid vehicle.
