A rail fastening device comprises a metal soleplate 11 for fixing to a support structure, a pair of clips 12 are provided on respective opposite sides of the soleplate 11 for engaging respective opposite sides of a rail 10 in use. A resiliently deformable rail pad 20 is placed on the soleplate 11 between the clips 12. The rail pad 20 has an elongate rib 21 on its lower surface which extend into complementary socket 18 formed in the upper surface of the soleplate 11. The socket 18 and rib 20 extending perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rail 10 in use. The socket and rib 18,21 prevent the rail pad 20 from moving and locate the rail pad 20 in such a way that any forces applied thereto do not promote tearing. There may be more than one rib and socket. The length of the socket may be longer than the length of the rib. The rib may be adjacent a transversely extending end edge 11 of the rail pad. The clips may engage the sole plate, or may extend through the sole plate and engage the support structure.
