An electrically-assisted hub 100 for a pedal cycle has an electrically-assisted drive system incorporated therein. A rear sprocket 80 is mounted on or adjacent the hub 100 and is driven by a chain or belt. A cadence sensor has moving parts 111 and fixed parts 112. The moving parts 111 are mounted on a part 13 of the electrically-assisted drive system that rotates with the rear sprocket 80 while the fixed part 112 is mounted on a part 1 that doesn’t move relative to the cycle frame. Rotating part 13 may be a part (e.g. a planet carrier) of an epicyclic gear set (15) that is part of the electrically-assisted drive system, which preferably provides a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
