Dynamic rail vehicle characteristic measurement system (Fig.1,1) comprises a data collection zone 6 associated with a section of railway track (Fig.2,2). It collects data as the train travels through the zone. Processor 7 collates and analyses the collected data to determine train characteristics. It uses these characteristics to calculate corresponding operating criteria for the train, which are communicated to a trackside or on-board operating system via communications link (10,Fig.1). The zone may include a Weigh-in-Motion system comprising axle weight sensors 11a,b to highlight weight distribution issues on each axle; a wheel counter 13a,b; a wheel impact load detector (WILD) 3a,b to produce a load profile for each wheel and determine wheel condition; a LIDAR scanner 19 to establish gauge; and a video camera 20 for determining train type and integrity. Thus a line speed of a train could be increased if its is lighter than expected - or restricted if its wheels have irregularities – with a corresponding financial charge.
