A pivot shoe 400 for a tilt and slide sash window. The pivot shoe 400 comprises a rotatable cam member 450 to be coupled to tilting of the window and a first braking member 414. Rotation of the rotatable cam member during tilting of the window sash (101) causes the first braking member 414 to move and engage the frame of a window (102). Preferably there is an axially movable further cam component with recesses 443 and ramps 444 to linearly displace this cam element by rotation of cam member 450, this further cam component part of an axial moving brake 440 which may include cam slopes 447 for driving engagement of cam ramps 420 of first brake. Preferably there are two opposing brake members 414 to protrude from opposing sides of the pivot shoe which may be via a resiliently providing a bias force to urge brakes into retracted position.
