A compound aircraft comprises a fuselage 12 with a fixed wing 14 and an autorotating rotary wing 24, with a pair of engines 20, 22 mounted on the fixed wing, each driving a propellor. A tailplane 26 is mounted at the rear of the fuselage and comprises a horizontal lifting surface 28 extending in a lateral direction on either side the fuselage. On either side of the tailplane there is an upright fin 30 spaced from the centreline of the fuselage. An electric motor is connectable to the rotary wing to drive it and to generate electrical power by recovering energy from it. A battery is linked to the electric motor to provide electrical power and to store electrical energy recovered by the motor. The fins can be substantially vertical and can extend both above and below the horizontal lifting surface of the tailplane. They can also be positioned such that they extend into the swept volume extending rearwardly from the engine’s propellers. The rotary wing can have a span sufficient to extend over part of the tailplane, such as part of the horizontal lifting surface. The engine’s propellers can be located rearwardly of the wing.
