A furniture latch comprises a magnet 205 located on a first furniture element. A second furniture element, such as a tray for an aircraft seat, carries a lever 115 having a protruding member 136 that is pivotable into and out of engagement with a slot 204 in the first furniture element. The lever is pivoted at one end 118. To undo the latch, lever 115 is moved downwards, moving the member 136 away from the slot 204, enabling the tray to be swung down and used. To secure the tray, the tray is closed and the member 136 is allowed to re-engage slot 204 and is held in the engaged position by magnet 205.
