A man overboard recovery system may be located within a compartment of or adjacent to a lifejacket g or the like. The system may comprise a gas pressurised canister a length of line, cord or tether f affixed to the compartment at one end and may be affixed to a visual or radar detectable locating device c at the far end. In the event of a man overboard sea water automatically triggers a gas cartridge deploying the line and the locating device which is deployed downwind of the man overboard. One or more lifting rings e may be provided to lift the wearer using a boat hook or gaff. The line may have shock absorbing properties.
