A system 20 for a grid-enabled vehicle that integrates vehicle traction and charging includes bidirectional DC power source 22, first bidirectional converter 24, second bidirectional converter 26, electric machine 28 including first stator field winding 36 and second stator field winding 38, and electric grid input port 30. The system can run in two modes. In drive mode the first bidirectional converter energises the first field winding to supply power from the DC source to the first field winding, and the second bidirectional converter energises the second field winding in synchrony with the first field winding to supply power from the DC source to the second field winding. In charging mode the first bidirectional converter energises the first field winding to supply power from the grid to the first field winding, and the second field winding is energised by the first field winding to supply energy from the grid to the DC source. The stator includes a plurality of slots spaced circumferentially around its inner surface, each slot including a first winding portion associated with the first field winding and a second winding portion associated with the second field winding.
