A spreader beam 40 for lifting a load comprises: at least two load points 52, each load point being arranged to support a respective portion of the load; load detection means 64, which may comprise a load cell, arranged to output a signal indicative of the magnitude of individual loads applied to each of the load points 52 when the load is supported and slope detection means (which may be incorporated into processing means 62), which may be one or more inclinometers, arranged to output a signal indicative of an inclination of the spreader beam 40 relative to a horizontal plane. The inclination signal may correspond to the inclination of spreader 40 in two orthogonal axis relative to the horizontal plane. The spreader 40 may comprise a processing means 62 which may comprise integrated sensor electronics. Each load point 52 may be arranged to support a respective hoist. There is also claimed a crane system including the spreader 40. The cranes system may comprise a draw wire encoder and may be a gantry crane system.
