A means for maintaining laminar fluid flow over a structural body comprises a stepped cross-sectional structure 2, 3. When applied to a surface 1, the means may conceal external surface roughness, imperfections, gaps, forward steps or backward steps. The thickness and positional disposition of each step may be set to avoid a transition from laminar to turbulent flow. The means is preferably a laminate having layers formed from bonded tape. The layers of the laminate may be made from a material that is corrosion and erosion resistant. Preferably the means can accommodate surface curvature. The structural body may be a hull of a boat or a wing or blade of an aircraft.
