A communication system for a vehicle comprises a phased array antenna 220 having a plurality of elements, and a controller 212 configured to select a subset of the elements and preferably shift a phase of a signal emitted from each element to beam form a main lobe of a radiation pattern of the antenna based on a speed or change in speed of the vehicle. The controller may also select a subset of the elements to beam form the main lobe based on a steering angle, a brake signal, a turn signal, a location of the vehicle and a map database of a surrounding area, or a route generated by a navigation system. The map database may be based on data indicative of prior selection of elements, reception strength, magnitude of reflections or weather conditions, and may include the site, height, size or construction of buildings or a position of a wireless tower. The main lobe may be concentrated in at least two directions to the front of the vehicle based on the location of the vehicle approaching a cross street.
