A controller is configured to display a brake capacity based on a temperature 226 of friction material of a brake and a predicted brake fade threshold 228 derived from the speed, mass, and current angle of inclination of a vehicle. In a first aspect a information console for a vehicle has a gauge to provide the display. In a second aspect a vehicle has an instrument cluster to provide the display. The predicted brake fade threshold may further be derived from an expected change in elevation and/or an expected brake force along a predetermined route. It may further be derived from an expected change in elevation associated with a current location and a direction of travel. The controller may be configured to output the predicted fade threshold based on a brake material coefficient characterized by historical changes in brake temperature associated with brake force and brake duration. The capacity may be based upon the difference between the predicted fade threshold and the temperature. A warning may be output if capacity is less than a threshold or if the temperature exceeds the fade threshold.
