The invention relates to a means for controlling a display device 114 (such as a Head Up Display [HUD] in a vehicle 102) to display an image of an object 106 (such as a person, other vehicle, road signs, etc) that is located in an area of reduced visibility 104a (like those caused by environmental factors, such as light intensity, snow, rain, fog, etc), comprising; receiving visibility information relating to a region, from a visibility detector 108 (e.g. a photometer); determining a visibility level 112a and 112b; determining display settings if the level is below a predetermined threshold; receiving object information from a detector 110 (e.g. radar, stereoscopic camera); generating an image of the object; determining a control signal for a display device (e.g. controls for brightness, contrast, colour, opaqueness); outputting the control signal. The system may comprise GPS, which may be used for determining object information. The invention is designed to only display information to the driver when it is deemed necessary, so as to reduce distractions by constantly displaying data.
