A side airbag 110 comprises a first side (135, figure 5), a second side (137), a main portion 136 and an extension portion 138. The main portion has a recess (140) in the first side. The extension portion is supported by and is in communication with the main portion. A first tether 150 is connected between the main portion and the extension portion. A vent 144 is disposed in the main portion and is selectively moveable from a closed orientation to an open orientation. A second tether (152) extends from the second side to the recess. The vent may have a flap 146 disposed over its opening, said flap being held in place by a third tether 148. Both of the first and third tethers may be selectively released. In a first inflated configuration the third tether is released, thus opening the vent, and the first tether is not released, thus not allowing the extension portion to expand. In a second inflated configuration the tethers are released in an opposite manner. The tethers, extension portion and vent allow the airbag to be inflated to a shape suitable for the size of the occupant.
