A vehicle system is disclosed comprising a processor and memory for carrying out a climate control method. The method comprises: determining a travel time to a pickup location (310); detecting a present cabin environment (315); determining a target cabin environment (320); determining an environment adjustment time to adjust the present cabin environment to the target environment (325); and activating at least one climate control in accordance with the adjustment time and the travel time (335). The vehicle may be an autonomous vehicle, and the disclosed method may save energy by obviating the need to run the climate system when the vehicle is unoccupied prior to picking up passengers. The system, which may be a HVAC system, may be activated to adjust cabin temperature or to defrost windows. The system may further comprise a navigation system.
