An emergency response system comprises an autonomous vehicle 106 sending an emergency request in response to detecting an occupant experiencing a medical emergency. An emergency router selects a route 102 to an emergency facility 108, and also selects infrastructure nodes 110a that are along the route 102 to broadcast messages to create an emergency corridor. The facility 108 may be a hospital selected based upon distance, occupant preference, estimated travel time, emergency type and facility availability. The broadcast messages may include the route 102, vehicle location, vehicle heading and vehicle speed. A further aspect of the application is a method to create an emergency corridor, the method may comprise determining authorization and determining the route based upon weather and traffic. The method may further comprise the messages causing further vehicles to determine whether their paths will intersect the route 102 and providing instructions to clear a lane for the autonomous vehicle.
