A method of managing a capacitor module of a vehicle, such as one with a hybrid energy storage system, comprising: receiving 520 a signal indicative of a likelihood of future engine cranking, charging 530 a capacitor module from a battery module of the vehicle in dependence on the received signal, such that a state of charge of the capacitor module is at least a minimum state of charge for engine cranking, and providing 550 electrical power solely from the capacitor module to a starter means associated with the engine, in dependence 540 on a signal indicative of a requirement for engine cranking, to crank the engine for starting. Preferably the signal is based on a trigger event such as opening of a vehicle access aperture (such as a door, boot, tailgate, roof), or a signal indicative of unlocking of the vehicle, or pre-heating of the vehicle, a schedule means indicative of a vehicle users schedule, or a vehicle users location. Preferably the method is performed if the temperature of the battery module is greater than a predetermined value.
