A method of autonomously controlling a vehicle 100 includes; in response to receiving a start signal, confirming using range sensors 108 that a garage door 118 of a garage in which the vehicle is located is open. If so then an autonomy unit 112 starts an engine of the vehicle and maneuvers the vehicle out of a garage until a tailpipe 124 is outside the garage. If there is an obstruction behind the vehicle, such as a closed garage door, a notification including an image taken from a rear facing camera 110 may be sent to a mobile device 122 and also the autonomy unit may communicate with a garage door controller 116 to open the door. Images may be streamed to the mobile device as the vehicle is maneuvered out of the garage and the engine may be turned off after a predetermined time. The system may be useful in avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning in a garage.
