Means for detecting a pedestrian 99 in a camera 36 image, determining if the face of the pedestrian is present in the image, and causing a vehicle 30 to change lanes if no face is detected. The area of pedestrian detection may be in front and to the sides 60 of the path of the vehicle, further to this, facial detection may only be done on pedestrians when they are in these areas. The detection may also extend to determining if two eyes or a head are present in the image of the pedestrian. Upon detection of the absence of a face various responses such as actuating a horn, headlamps 50, ceasing of acceleration or applying braking may be used. Brakes may also be actuated if both an absence of a pedestrians face and lack of occupants in the vehicle 30 are detected. This invention aims to allow a vehicle to detect if a pedestrian has seen it, based on whether the pedestrians face is detected by cameras on the vehicle, which would indicate that the pedestrian is looking in the direction of the vehicle.
