Method and apparatus for monitoring tires of vehicles via personal area networks. A tire detector determines the position of a tire 512 based on wireless communication between a transceiver (118; fig. 1) coupled to the tire and nodes (102a-c; fig 1) spaced apart on the vehicle body. It then identifies a duration that the tire is at the tire position 518, and presents a warning to rotate the tire position 522 (i.e. change the tire from one wheel well location to another as part of maintenance) when the duration is greater than a predetermined threshold 520. The tire detector may use triangulation to determine the tire position and may present the warning via a mobile device. Warnings may also be given based on measured tire pressure 508; based on vehicle speed and orientation measured using a gyroscope during manoeuvres; or when the tire is decoupled from the body 516 (e.g. due to theft). The rate at which the nodes broadcast beacons for the transceiver may be based on the vehicle location 524,526, 528.
