An assembly, for a space elevator 10, has a base 15 and a number of vertically connected sections 20. The base has a fuel and air pumping stations 16. There are upper and lower sections, each having an elevator shaft 37a,37b and one or more fuel conduits, air conduits 38, and jet engines 25. The conduits route fuel and air upwardly through sections; air is received by the jet(s) of upper sections 24, the lower sections 22 jet(s) may use atmospheric air. The jet(s) may have variable thrust angles for horizontal stabilisation and/or there may be vertical primary jet(s) 25 for weight support, and horizontal secondary 27 jet(s), to stabilise against air currents. Preferably, coupling devices with hydraulic stabilisers and pressure sensors allow limited vertical movement between sections. The jet(s) may be controlled based on measurements from the pressure sensors and GPS. Preferably, transit stages, having a pulley and rope, move an elevator car between handover stages where the car is disconnected the rope of one transit stage and connected to the next. A top structure 50 may have rooms for human occupation, rotated to simulate gravity.
