A time bound for a lane change manoeuvre, for example in a semi-autonomous vehicle or fully autonomous vehicle, is determined based on determining a reaction time, an occupant acceptance time, a vehicle manoeuvre time and a manoeuvre cancellation time (step 1802) and authorisation is requested to perform the manoeuvre (step 1804). The authorisation request is cancelled (step 1808) if it is determined that the expired time bound is expired (step 1806), for example if the manoeuvre is completed or if it is determined that it is not possible to complete the manoeuvre. The system may perform the manoeuvre (step 1812) if an input responding to the authorisation request (step 1810) is received before the time bound expires.
