A landing gear controller is configured to cause a landing gear extension or retraction system 300 to perform only a first portion 310 of a process during an aircraft take-off or landing procedure, based on a status of the aircraft, and prior to receiving a command 320 for the extension or retraction, given by the pilot for example. The first portion of the process may include causing an actuator to positively hold an associated landing bay door in a closed position and unlocking of the door lock to permit movement to an open position; this may be performed whilst the aircraft is on the ground and involve use of avionics. The controller may also operate an isolator 312, used to isolate the system from a power supply, prior to receiving the command. The controller may cause the system to perform a second portion 330 of the process, which may include causing an associated landing gear bay door to move between closed and open positions. The aircraft status may include of ground speed, lift amount, aircraft angle, absolute altitude, true altitude and/or aircraft rotation.
