A charging station 1 for electrical energy storage batteries of electric vehicles (EVs) 9 comprising: an input circuit for connection to an electrical power source 2; an output circuit for connection to the batteries of electric vehicles 9; a DC current charging buffer 6, such as a buffer battery, configured to be charged by the electrical power source 2; an n-phase transformer 8 for galvanic isolation of the input circuit from the output circuit with primary windings on the input circuit side and secondary windings on the output circuit side; a sensor for sensing voltage or current consumed during charging the EV 9, providing a sensor signal indicative of the sensed voltage and/or current; the output circuit further comprising a switching circuit 7 for periodically connecting the positive and negative terminals of the charging buffer 6 to the transformer 8 primary windings; and control means 41 for receiving the sensor signal and configured to control the switching circuit 7 to provide a predetermined voltage and/or charging current.
