A landing gear assembly 102 for an aircraft has a leg 106 configured to be mounted on an airframe 114 and rotated about a pivot axis 112 between deployed and stowed configurations. The landing gear has a stay assembly having a first 122 and a second stay 124 forming a linkage which folds as the landing gear moves from the stowed to the deployed configuration, or vice versa. The stay restricts movement of the landing gear when deployed, and the linkages move through an intermediate transversely arranged state during unfolding (fig.3). Preferably, a nose landing gear assembly, with the linkage unfolded, mostly beneath the leg, when stowed; angles between the leg, and each of the stays, and a horizontal plane differing by less than 20 degrees when stowed. The leg may be moved away from the stay during deployment using an actuator 116 attached to the same point 120 as the first stay on the airframe. The stay assembly may have a further two links 126,128 connected between the stays, having an over-centre state to lock the stay in the folded and/or unfolded state, with an unlock actuator to move the further links from the over-centre state.
