Light source 4 (e.g. halogen lamp, LED) illuminates a field of view of sensor 10 on surface 6 (e.g. road, track, runway). Optical engine 3 collimates light from the field of view onto the sensor. Sensor 10, comprising array of photodetectors 1 and spatial-variable filter 2 which limits the wavelength of light incident on each photodetector, measures the spectrum of incident light. The wavelength of light able to pass through filter 2 may vary linearly or discontinuously across the filter, and may be short-range (near) infra-red (900-1700 nm). The optical engine may comprise an aperture and/or focussing or collimating lenses. By analysing the sensor data, a controller may determine the presence of a contaminant or the surface condition, may identify the contaminant (e.g. water, snow, ice, de-icing salt, oil, leaves) or its thickness, may identify the chemical composition of the contaminant, and may estimate the tyre-to-surface friction coefficient.
