A method and control system for a hybrid vehicle, comprising: receiving a torque request for an internal combustion engine (202; fig. 1) configured to mechanically couple to a first axle (220; fig.1) of the vehicle; determining a shortfall relative to the torque request, dependent on torque providable by the engine; and providing an output to control an electric machine (212; fig. 1) to provide a torque to compensate for the torque shortfall, wherein the electric machine is mechanically coupled to a second axle (224a,b; fig. 1) of the vehicle. There may also be a second electric machine (216; fig.1) on the first axle which is able to also provide compensation torque by removing negative generative torque. The torque control of each of the electric machines (e.g. motor/generators) may be based on whether torque on the other electric machine is limited by a lash crossing protection function.
