An alarm system for mounting to a moving vehicle (e.g. train 10) comprises a directional sound generator 12 for continuously generating sound into a moving area of protection 14 ahead of the vehicle while it is moving. E.g. alarm signals generated into an enhanced protection region (EPR) at the level of railway tracks 18 may be minimally perceptible by people 20 waiting at a platform 22 or passengers 23 onboard another train 24 (Fig.2). The sound generator may comprise a phased transducer array that is pulsed to provide beam steering. The sound may vary in intensity with time and its power or range may depend on the vehicle’s speed. An enhanced sound may be generated upon activation of an emergency operation mode. The sound may comprise a high pitch and a low pitch component. The system may also provide vibrations through the ground or rails. It may receive data from other systems which it may use to evaluate a condition of the track ahead.
