During operation a body of a machine such as a step of an escalator travels around a path such as a closed loop comprising a plurality of sections of substantially constant direction 301 to 306 separated by a plurality of direction changes 307 to 312 and at least a subset of the plurality of direction changes cause the body to undergo a characteristic movement such as a change in angular velocity associated with a rotation about an axis of the body. A method of characterising the path comprises detecting the characteristic movements of the body as it travels along the path, associating each characteristic movement with one of the subset of direction changes, estimating a distance between adjacent direction changes of the subset of direction changes based on a time delay between sequentially detected characteristic movements and characterising the path using the estimated distances to estimate the lengths of the sections of substantially constant direction. The method may facilitate the detection of wear in components of the machine.
