An aircraft cabin lighting system comprises one or more cabin lighting units, each unit comprising an emergency exit sign arranged to be electrically illuminated; and one or more luminescent emergency exit signs 1. The luminescent signs are portable and comprise an adhesive layer 3 allowing the sign to be adhered to a surface. The signs are adhered to a surface in the vicinity of the electrical emergency exit sign in use, whilst not requiring electricity to function. The luminescent emergency exit sign may be photoluminescent or chemiluminescent, may be flexible to adapt to a surface shape, and may be located adjacent to the lower corner of an emergency exit. It may be sized to cover the electrical emergency exit sign when applied. The adhesive layer may be detachable such that the sign can be installed temporarily. The luminescent sign may comprise an exit identifier comprising one or more words or symbols formed by shaping or masking part of the luminescent layer. Additionally, a method of providing emergency exit lighting and a method of maintaining flight-worthiness of an aircraft is disclosed.
