A hinge assembly includes a cam 300 and compression device 400 that counterbalances a weight of a member (20, fig. 1) e.g. a door, ramp, or vehicle platform. A housing (60, fig. 7) is engages the member 20. The downward movement of the member 20 drives the housing 60, or cam follower guides 80 attached to the housing, to engage first cam followers 210,215 and cause a cam follower holder 200 on shaft (100, fig. 13) to rotate. This drives second cam followers 230,233 in angled slots 312,314,316 or surfaces of the cam 300. The cam follower holder 200 moves laterally against the compression device 400 which rotationally biases against member 20. The angles of the slots or cam surfaces vary in incline to varying torque forces of the member 20 during the opening/closing. The compression device may be a spring, pneumatic and/or hydraulic.
