A data-processing system 10 onboard a rail vehicle receives an input set of rail vehicle characteristics and a dataset comprising an independently verified calibrated wheel radius from which calibrated rail vehicle characteristics are produced. They are used to calibrate a distance measurement of the system. The system may comprise a processor 11, e.g. part of a European Vital Computer (EVC) 12 of a ERTMS. The processor may receive data from a wheel revolution counter and use this and the wheel radius to calculate a distance travelled by the train. The independently verified wheel radius may be received from a trackside system, e.g. LIDAR or wheel impact load detector (WILD). If the calibration process indicates an issue with the odometry system, an alarm may be sounded to the driver, or the train may be stopped. The input set of train characteristics may be accessed from onboard data store 16 or input by a technician via input device 18.
