An air handling control system 102 for a vehicle 100, controlling delivery of fresh air and recirculated air to a cabin 106 of the vehicle, wherein a controller receives a signal indicative of a number of occupants within the vehicle cabin (402, figure 5) and determines a maximum air recirculation period (404, figure 5) based on the number of occupants. A control signal terminates the air recirculation mode (406, figure 5) once the maximum time for recirculation has elapsed. Once the maximum time has elapsed the system may switch to a fresh air mode. Further, an airflow control element (124, fig. 2A) may set a respective proportion of fresh air when in recirculation mode. The number of occupants may be determined seat or seatbelt sensors. A system, vehicle, and method are also claimed.
