The arithmetic unit 23 comprises: a first arithmetic part for performing arithmetic of travel resistance F0 of a whole escalator during no-load time; a second arithmetic part for performing arithmetic of travel resistance Ft of a movement hand rail 1 during an encoder detection time point; a third arithmetic part for performing arithmetic of travel resistance Ft0 of the hand rail 1 during no-load time, based on the travel resistance F0 and travel resistance Fs by step; a fourth arithmetic part for performing arithmetic of increased travel resistance ΔFt of the movement hand rail 1 based on the above-mentioned travel resistance Ft and travel resistance Ft0; a fifth arithmetic part for performing arithmetic an integrated value ΣΔFt by integration of the travel resistance ΔFt; and a sixth arithmetic part for performing arithmetic of a wear amount of the drive chain, based on a number of bending Σn of the drive chain, and the integrated value ΣΔFt.
