PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber capable of varying the capacity of a gas chamber.SOLUTION: A hydraulic shock absorber (10) includes a first gas chamber (22) which compensates an amount of hydraulic fluid corresponding to a variation amount of the volume of a piston rod (12) due to advancing into a damper cylinder (11) and retreating from the damper cylinder (11), a second gas chamber (22A) which can be communicated with the first gas chamber (22), and a seal member (33) which switches between a communication portion communicating the first gas chamber (22) with the second gas chamber (22A) and a shut-off portion shutting off the first gas chamber (22) from the second gas chamber (22A).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
