PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector and a detection method with which it is possible to improve the accuracy of detecting a parkable section in a configuration in which a plurality of ultrasonic sensors, etc., are provided on a side face of a vehicle.SOLUTION: Provided is a detector for detecting a parkable section on a side of a vehicle while the vehicle is traveling, comprising: a first ultrasonic wave transmission/reception unit provided on the vehicle, for transmitting a first ultrasonic wave to a side and receiving a reflection wave of the first ultrasonic wave; a second ultrasonic wave transmission/reception unit provided in the vehicle rearward of the first ultrasonic wave transmission/reception unit in the travel direction of the vehicle, for transmitting a second ultrasonic wave to a side and receiving a reflection wave of the second ultrasonic wave; and an ultrasonic wave transmission/reception control unit for controlling the transmission timing of the second ultrasonic wave transmission/reception unit and causing a second ultrasonic wave to be transmitted at position between positions at where the first ultrasonic wave is transmitted.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
