PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve rapid torque variation and fuel deterioration by preventing a traveling mode from being switched frequently from an EV mode to an engine use mode (an HEV mode or an EG mode).SOLUTION: In switching a traveling mode from an EV mode to an engine use mode (an HEV mode or an EG mode), an engine start control device of a hybrid vehicle, when detecting an interruption vehicle 31 from a close range in front of an own vehicle 1 (S2), determines relative speed between the own vehicle 1 and the interruption vehicle 31, and when finding that the speed of the interruption vehicle 31 is slower than the speed of the own vehicle, predicts that a driver will perform deceleration operation and ceases switching of the traveling mode to suppress engine start-up (S7); or, when the speed of the interruption vehicle 31 is almost equal to the speed of the own vehicle (S4) and when the interruption vehicle 31 interrupts in front of the own vehicle 1 from an extremely close range (S5), predicts that the driver performs deceleration operation as well and ceases the switching of the traveling mode to suppress engine start-up (S7).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4

    【課題】走行モードがEVモードからエンジン使用モード(HEVモード或いはEGモード)に頻繁に切換えられることを防止して、急激なトルク変動、及び燃費悪化を改善する。【解決手段】走行モードをEVモードからエンジン使用モード(HEVモード或いはEGモード)に切換えるに際し、自車両1の前方に対して近距離からの割込車31が検出された場合(S2)、自車両1と割込車31との相対速度を求めて割込車31の速度が自車速よりも遅い場合は運転者が減速操作を行うと予測し、走行モードの切換えを中断させてエンジン始動を抑制させる(S7)。又、割込車31の速度が自車速とほぼ等しく(S4)、且つ、割込車31が自車両1の前方に対して極近距離から割込んだ場合も(S5)、運転者が減速操作を行うと予測し、走行モードの切換を中断させてエンジン始動を抑制させる(S7)。【選択図】図4
