To provide methods and apparatus for detecting icing conditions and/or ice formation on an aircraft in a more reliable manner and/or under a wider array of atmospheric conditions.SOLUTION: A method comprises disposing an ice detector 100 on an exterior surface of an aircraft, the ice detector comprising a probe surface 110 and a pyroelectric material layer 120 disposed on at least a portion of the probe surface. The method further comprises generating a charge on a surface of the pyroelectric material layer to increase the local freezing point of water on the surface of the pyroelectric material layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
