To reduce thermal load of a start clutch during travel in congestion.SOLUTION: A travel control device comprises: an operation level command switch 33a that switches between an automatic operation of a level lower than level 3 including a peripheral monitoring duty for a driver during traveling and an automatic operation of level 3 or higher not including the peripheral monitoring duty; a distance measurement device 31a that measures a vehicle gap from a front vehicle; and a start control unit 50 that controls a clutch actuator 3a and a brake actuator 5a according to the vehicle gap measured by the distance measurement device 31a, so as to travel following the front vehicle. When switching to automatic operation of the level 3 or higher is performed, the start control unit 50 controls the clutch actuator 3a and the brake actuator 5a such that a maximum value for the vehicle gap from the front vehicle during the vehicle start is larger than that when switching to automatic operation of a level lower than level 3 is performed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
