To provide an electric propulsion device capable of suppressing pitching and rolling of a ship with a simple configuration.SOLUTION: An electric propulsion device 1 propels a ship 100 by driving a propeller 8. The electric propulsion device comprises an electric motor 5, a clutch 9 and a controller 14. The electric motor 5 drives the propeller 8. The clutch 9 is arranged in a power transmission path from the electric motor 5 to the propeller 8 and switches the transmission and the disconnection of power. The controller 14 controls the electric motor 5 and the operation of the clutch 9. The controller 14 sets the clutch 9 to the disconnected state when a ship is stopped and rotates the electric motor 5 in the state where a direction of a rotating shaft A of the electric motor 5 contains a vertical component.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
