To provide a cross member of a vehicle body and a method for manufacturing the cross member in which it is possible to reduce weight while simplifying a structure and reducing the number of welded portions through the reduction of the number of components.SOLUTION: One side surface of a metal plate material W1 is pressed into a recess shape, and the other side surface thereof is pressed into a projection shape. The other side surface of the metal plate material W1 is cut into a substantially flat shape by shaving. The thus made metal plate material W1 is bent, and is then joined to another metal plate material W2 so as to form a closed cross section structure. As a result, a thick plate part and a thin plate part can be provided in the metal plate material W1, so that it is possible to reduce the weight of a cross member. Furthermore, it is not necessary to integrally weld a plurality of panel materials having plate thickness dimensions different from each other, so that it is possible to reduce the number of components and simplify a structure. In addition, it is possible to reduce manufacturing cost, suppress heat damage, and suppress rust formation through the reduction of the number of welded portions.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7

    【課題】部品点数の削減による構造の簡素化および溶接箇所の削減を図りながらも軽量化することができる車体のクロスメンバおよびクロスメンバの製造方法を提供する。【解決手段】金属製板材W1における一方側の面を凹状に他方側の面を凸状にそれぞれプレス加工する。金属製板材W1における前記他方側の面をシェービング加工により略平坦形状に切削する。このようにして作製された金属製板材W1を折り曲げた後、他の金属製板材W2に対し、閉断面構造を構成するように接合する。これにより、金属製板材W1に厚板部と薄板部とを設けることが可能となり、クロスメンバを軽量化することができる。また、板厚寸法が互いに異なる複数のパネル材を一体的に溶接する必要がないため、部品点数の削減を図ることができ、構造の簡素化、および、溶接箇所の削減による製造コストの低廉化、熱害の抑制、錆の発生の抑制を図ることができる。【選択図】図7
