To provide a revere travel detection device and a revere travel detection method for improving detection accuracy of a reverse travel vehicle based on output from a sensor of a vehicle detector regarding travel of vehicles on a road where lane change of travel vehicles is allowed.SOLUTION: In a reverse travel detection system 1, a reverse travel detection function of a vehicle detector 11 acquires vehicle detection signals based on output from sensors S1 to S4 of a sensor group S for detecting travel vehicles 3 of a plurality of lanes 2A and 2B for every lane in the lanes 2A and 2B. The reverse travel detection function of the vehicle detector 11 determines whether or not a reverse travel vehicle traveling on at least one of the plurality of lanes 2A and 2B in a reverse direction is present on the basis of a detection pattern regarding one or more travel vehicles in the vehicle detection signals.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
