To provide an electric power assist bicycle that is configured not to start assist when waiting for a traffic light so as prevent a pedal from vibrating and the bicycle from suddenly starting after waiting for a traffic light, so that a rider hardly feels surprise when starting the bicycle.SOLUTION: An electric power assist bicycle 1 comprises: a torque sensor 59 that detects man-power driving force applied to a pedal; a motor that is subjected to pulse width modulation control to generate assist-driving force for assisting power for rotating a wheel; a hole IC 60 that can detect count-number that increases whenever a rotor of the motor moves by a predetermined dimension to one side in a circumferential direction; and a control device 70 that when determining that the man-power driving force is less than driving force for starting assist and when the count-number is above the number of starting assist, on the basis of a first signal from the torque sensor 59 and a second signal from the hole IC 60, gradually increases a duty ratio in the pulse width modulation control.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3

    【課題】信号待ちのときにアシストが開始されることがなくて、信号待ち時におけるペダルの振動や信号待ち後の飛び出しを防止でき、人が発進時に唐突感を感じにくい電動アシスト自転車を提供すること。【解決手段】電動アシスト自転車1が、ペダルに付与された人力駆動力を検出するトルクセンサ59と、パルス幅変調制御が行われ、車輪を回転させる動力を補助する補助駆動力を生成するモータと、モータのロータが周方向の一方側に所定寸法移動する度に増加するカウント数を検出できるホールIC60と、トルクセンサ59からの第1信号と、ホールIC60からの第2信号とに基づいて、人力駆動力が補助開始駆動力未満であると共にカウント数が補助開始数以上になったと判定すると、パルス幅変調制御におけるデュ-ティ比を徐々に増加させる制御装置70と、を備えるようにする。【選択図】図3
