To provide a collision avoidance device for an automobile that applies braking to a vehicle by mechanically directly driving an existing brake pedal by using an actuator.SOLUTION: A collision avoidance device for an automobile comprises: an existing brake mechanism 22 mounted to a vehicle 1; an actuator 2 actuating the brake mechanism 22; a milli-wave radar 6 mounted to the vehicle 1 and monitoring forward objects; an environment monitoring apparatus 35 such as monocular camera 7; and a control device 3 judging information from the environment monitoring apparatus 35 and controlling the operation of the actuator 2. The actuator 2 mechanically directly drives a brake pedal 9 through a reduction gear 12.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
