To provide a hoist 5 of an elevator 1 and the elevator 1 capable of easily and highly accurately adjusting the position of an encoder 59.SOLUTION: Whether or not a coaxial degree of a rotary part of an encoder 59 with respect to a rotation center line of a drive sheave 54 falls within a permissible range can be confirmed by using a projection shaft part 62a projecting from an outer surface of an encoder bracket 66 coaxially to the rotary part of the encoder 59. When the coaxial degree falls outside the permissible range, the coaxial degree can be adjusted to fall within the permissible range by using axial position adjusting means 71 or axial parallelism adjusting means 72.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
