To provide an electric bicycle that can cause drive characteristics to flexibly meet a desire of a driver with a simple and inexpensive structure.SOLUTION: A method for actuating a drive unit (102) of an electric bicycle (100) includes the steps of: detecting a cadence of a crank drive device (104) of the electric bicycle (100); and controlling and actuating the drive unit (102) so as to generate drive force in a manner dependent on the detected cadence and based on an output characteristic map of the drive unit (102). The output characteristic map has an output characteristic curve that defines a predefined relation between the drive force by the drive unit (102) and an instantaneous cadence. The output characteristic map has the maximum output region. The output characteristic curve defines the maximum drive force by the drive unit (102) within the maximum output region. The maximum output region is located within a cadence region that can be decided by a driver of the electric bicycle (100).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
